Assisi Diary - Day 19 - Ponte Cavaliero

Today was a day for exploring an out-of-the-way place, the Marchetto Ravine, that flows into the Tescio River.  This trail is to the northeast of Subasio, and is far enough off the beaten track that one may anticipate encountering no one while hiking.  It's as beautiful as it is isolated.  Here's a glimpse looking over the side of the Marchetto Bridge.
It's nice to enjoy tranquil places and to encounter things from long ago that are not well known.  This next picture is of the Cavaliero Bridge, or Ponte Cavaliero.  In researching, I've read that it is an 18th Century bridge, a 17th Century bridge, a medieval bridge, and perhaps goes back to Roman times.  Whatever the case, when one is walking high along a ravine and suddenly notices through the trees a bridge that appears unchanged from centuries past, it's a treat for the imagination.
If you don't see it at first, look about two-thirds of the way up in the middle of the picture.  It's a dreamlike scene through the trees.
Ciao.
